Muhammad Jaseem M. is an Indian calligrapher known for setting the Guinness World Record for creating the longest handwritten Quran.[1]. His dedication to the art of calligraphy has garnered recognition, making him a notable figure in the field.

Early Life and Education

Muhammad Jaseem M. was born in Cherumukku near Tirurangadi, Kerala, India. From an early age, he exhibited a keen interest in calligraphy, influenced by the paintings of his elder brother, Ayoob. Jaseem pursued his second-year studies at Jamia Nooriya Arabic College in Pattikkad[2], near Perithalmanna.

Guinness World Record

Jaseem gained international acclaim for breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest handwritten Quran, a feat previously held by Egyptian scholar Mohammed Gabriel[3]. His exceptional achievement involved scripting a Quran in calligraphic style spanning an impressive 1,106 meters, surpassing the previous record of 700 meters. The project took nearly two years, and the handwritten Quran weighed 118.3 kg. It comprised 114 chapters, 6,348 verses, 325,384 Arabic letters, and 77,437 Arabic phrases[4].

Calligraphic Prowess

Jaseem's proficiency in calligraphy was honed through his passion for the art form. During his religious studies at a Dars (mosque-based study) in Tirur, he was introduced to Arabic calligraphy by his teacher, Swalahuddin Faizy[5]. The fluid and visually appealing manner in which he wrote Arabic script showcased the artistic beauty of calligraphy, recognized as an Islamic art form[6]

Recognition and Awards

Jaseem's accomplishment was acknowledged by officials, including young Muslim community leader Syed Munawwarali Shihab Thangal and All Guinness Records Holders (AGRH) State president Sattar Adoor[7]. He received the Guinness certificate at a function held at the Malappuram Press Club, marking him as the 75th person from Kerala to hold a Guinness World Record.
