Moritz Löhner; (born 3 November 1998) is a Germany professional Esports Sim racing competing across various championships on different racing simulation platforms.[1]. In 2021 he got the opportunity to race in real life, competing in the DTM Trophy, with FK Performance. His goal is to be a "Hybrid Racer", competing successfully both in the real and the virtual world.
SimRacing Esports Career
Moritz' father Peter Löhner introduced him to motorsports at a very young age, visiting the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft at the Norisring and also watching all kinds of racing on TV. That got him interested in playing racing games on consoles and especially the ones his Dad had on the PC - Race 07, rFactor and GTR2.
For a long time Löhner raced in fun leagues such as the "Bierbuden"[2] until the new era of Sim racing games have been released, specifically interesting for Moritz was RaceRoom Racing Experience. At the time EURONICS Gaming picked him up into their Sim racing team, which pushed him into an esports environment for the first time and later he managed to get some race wins of big championships and compete at offline/on site/LAN events (= meaning competitors race each other attending an event with the simulators standing right next to each other[3]).
In 2016 Löhner decided to try out iRacing and after a few months of racing on the platform he managed to qualify for the 2017 VRS GT iRacing World Championship with his new team CORE Motorsports.[4]
In 2018 Löhner qualified for the iRacing World Championship Grand Prix Series which was the most competitive simracing championship at the time and it's also when he got picked up by Williams Esports (the official esports team of the Williams Grand Prix Engineering|Williams Racing F1 Team) as one of their first drivers for the iRacing roster[5].
In 2019 Löhner's focus shifted towards RaceRoom once again and he picked up his first championship win in the ADAC GT Masters Esports Championship.
In 2020 he had his biggest success, first with winning the Porsche Esports Carrera Cup Deutschland[6], soon after the DTM Esports[7] and defending his title of the previous year, the ADAC GT Masters Esports Championship[8].[9]
Real Life Racing
DTM Trophy Test
After winning the DTM Esports Championship in 2020 Löhner's prize was to test the Mercedes AMG GT4 of CV Performance at the official Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters test days at the Lausitzring - that being his first time in a real race car. He was second fastest in the first session[10].
DTM Trophy Monza
On Wednesday in the week of the first race (16 June 2021), Löhner announced that he will compete in the first race of the 2021 DTM Trophy with FK Performance in a BMW M4 GT4[11] making his debut in real life racing.
In Friday practice Löhner was second fastest in Free Practice 1 and the fastest driver in Free Practice 2.[12] On Saturday he managed to qualify the car on front row in second place[13] and only lost one position in the race to finish third in his first race of his career.[14] Sunday's qualifying found Moritz in fourth place[15] but he fell down to ninth in the second race. In the following week Löhner was voted the Driver of the Weekend by the Automobilclub von Deutschland[16].
Full season in the DTM Trophy
Following the good result in his first racing weekend FK Performance announced Media Markt and Xiaomi Germany as the main sponsors for Löhner's car just before the second racing weekend at the Lausitzring securing him a cockpit for the full season.[17]
