Monty Lyman is a British doctor and author.

His first book, The Remarkable Life of the Skin (published by Transworld, Penguin Random House) is described as ‘the first popular science book to explore our most overlooked organ in all its physical, psychological and social glory’.[1] It was published in July 2019. The book was a The Sunday Times ‘Must Read’,[2] one of their ‘Best Books of 2019’,[3] chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week[4] and was shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize.[5] Aged 26, Lyman was the youngest shortlisted author in the prize’s history.[6]

The Remarkable Life of the Skin has been described as ‘a seriously entertaining…clever, optimistic book’ by Melanie Reid in The Times,[7] ‘an exciting introduction to a little-known microscopic universe and to a talented new writer’ and ‘an unexpectedly great adventure’ in The Sunday Times[8] and ‘imaginatively told…knowledgeable and enthusiastic’ by The Spectator.[9] It was also reviewed in the scientific journal Nature: ‘Lyman peels back the science on human skin in this absorbing, fact packed study’.[10]

Lyman has appeared on TV (BBC Breakfast), radio (including BBC Inside Science and BBC World Service),[11] podcasts (BBC science focus)[12] and has given talks at national conferences.

Lyman's second book, The Painful Truth, will be published in July 2021. An essay based on some of the book's research won the 2020 Royal Society of Medicine's 2020 Pain Medicine prize.[13]

He lives in Oxford, England.
