Monica Taylor (born January 12, 1983) is an American educator and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, Dr. Taylor has served on Delaware County Council since January 2020.[1]

Academic career

Taylor is an Associate Professor and the Graduate Program Director at Temple University in the College of Public Health.[2] Before joining Temple's Department of Kinesiology in 2022, Taylor was a Professor at the University of the Sciences, and St. Ambrose University.[2]

Political career

In 2017, Taylor was elected to serve as a School Board Director for the Upper Darby School District.[3] In addition to being an at-large representative for over 90,000 increasingly diverse residents, Taylor also served as the Co-Chair of the school district's Finance and Operations Committee.[4]

On November 5, 2019 Taylor made history when she won her campaign for Delaware County Council, flipping it to Democratic control in over 150 years.[5] She also became the first black woman to ever be elected to the position.

After becoming Chair of County Council in January 2022, Taylor led the effort to create a Health Department to serve the over 575,000 residents of Delaware County [6].

In October 2022, Governor Tom Wolf appointed Taylor to a the Pennsylvania State Board of Education for a three year term. [7] Taylor serves on the Board's Council of Basic Education, which is tasked with developing a "master plan for basic education Commonwealth."[8]

Personal life

Taylor is a resident of Upper Darby Township where she lives with her husband Jason and their three daughters.
