Mona Sinha (born Sharmila Mona Sinha; May 6, 1965) is a philanthropist, gender equality advocate, and financial investor in women-led businesses[1]. Sinha was formerly associated with Morgan Stanley, Unilever, and Elizabeth Arden. She has also worked in philanthropy and activism, with a focus on gender and racial inequities.

In January 2023, Sinha joined Equality Now as the Global Executive Director.

Sinha is based in New York but has lived in London, Hong Kong, and India.

Early Life

Sinha was born in Calcutta, India, in 1965. During her formative teenage years, Sinha volunteered at Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Calcutta, where the foundation of her interest in social justice and gender equity was formed. As a volunteer, Sinha witnessed the gender preference for boys over girls, who were less likely to be adopted at the orphanage.

Education

Sinha began her undergraduate studies at Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India, from 1984 to 1985. The murder of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 led to a breakdown of India’s highly politicized education system, forcing Sinha to move to the United States. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa and was a First Group Scholar In 1993, she earned her MBA in Finance and Marketing from the Columbia Business School in New York.
