Mohamed Jamel Nefzi (born 28 June 1987) is a Tunisian film director, producer, and writer. He is the founder of the independent production company Akkad Productions and holds a Professional Cinema Card issued by the Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs. He is best known for the documentary film 130 Years of Alaouites, which was officially selected for screening at the Carthage Film Festival (JCC 2019).
Early life and education
Mohamed Jamel Nefzi was born on 28 June 1987 in Tunis, Tunisia. He completed his secondary education at the Alaoui Lyceum in Tunis, obtaining a baccalauréat in literary studies (2004–2008). He later studied English language and literature at the Institut Supérieur des Langues de Gabès (2008–2011), followed by vocational training in cinematographic directing techniques in Tunisia (2011–2013).
Career
Nefzi began his professional career directing television programmes for Tunisia World TV (TWT), focusing on cultural and social issues. He directed the documentary film From Black Thursday to the Friday of Departure, which traces Tunisian social movements from 1978 to the 2011 revolution.
He later founded Akkad Productions, an independent production company specialising in documentary films, fiction projects, and audiovisual content.
In 2019, Nefzi directed the documentary 130 Years of Alaouites, which explores the history of the Alaoui educational institution in Tunis and its role in Tunisian cultural heritage. The film premiered at the City of Culture in Tunis after several years of research and production. It was officially selected for the Carthage Film Festival (JCC 2019).The film received international media coverage including Africine and Africultures.
The film was also screened in the context of international cultural exchange programs in Africa, including Cameroon-based academic research references on cultural diplomacy.
Akkad Productions also produced the music video Ach Ma Ja Yakhou Bel Khater, supported by the Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs’ Directorate of Music and Dance.
Nefzi has given several television interviews on Tunisian media, including Zitouna TV, Attessia TV, and national television broadcasts via the national television covering his career and cinematic work.
In addition to filmmaking, he has contributed essays and cultural criticism to Arabic-language publications such as Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, and Al Chourouk. His essay Crisis of the State... Crisis of Art was published in Al Magharibia Street and later referenced by Africine as part of his intellectual work.
He also participated in the Erasmus+ TOURITAGE programme at the University of Jendouba, where he led workshops in cinematographic editing and audiovisual production.
