Modhalum Kaadhalum is an Indian Tamil-language romance soap opera written by Suresh Shanmugam. It is based on the 2013 Hindi serial Ye Hai Mohabbatein[1]. The first episode aired on Star Vijay on the 24th April 2023[2], and all episodes are available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.[3]

Modhalum Kaadhalum is set in Tamil Nadu, and is the story of Vikram (Sameer Ahamathu), an arrogant businessman who is of Telangana origin; and his family's next-door neighbour Vedha (Ashwathy Ash), who is fond of children but cannot have them on her own. They meet each other through Vikram's child, Tanvika, who Vikram is absent from and who has lost her mother.[4]

Plot

Vedha, an ambitious and caring paediatrician moves with her family to a new home in the city, next to Vikram's family house. Immediately the next door neighbour's, and Vikram's daughter Tanvika starts to bond with her, and Vedha wishes for a child of her own.

Vikram, an arrogant businessman who has just divorced his wife for being disloyal to him, despises love and relationships. He plays a prank on his employee during his wedding, and causes them to doubt each others' trust.

She is invited to her sister-in-law's baby's naming ceremony, where she meets her former fiancé, where it is known that his family decided to cancel their marriage last-minute due to her infertility.

Later, Tanvika wishes to wish her father Vikram a happy Mother's Day, and asks Vedha for permission to use her phone. However, Vikram becomes angry when he hears this wish, and shouts at Vedha for giving Tanvika her phone. This marks their first interaction.

Vikram's absence from Tanvika's life instigates his parents to find a bride willing to marry Vikram and act as a mother for Tanvika. They resort to asking their daughter Nandhini's husband's sister to meet them to talk in person. However, Tanvika is upset that Vikram refuses to attend her school ceremony due to being busy in Hyderabad, so asks Vedha to help.[5]

Production

Development

In the end of December 2022, Star Vijay announced another Tamil television remake of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein titled Vikram Vedha, named after the names of the two main characters, produced by Venus Infotainment[7] which premiered on 24 April 2023. With the launch of the second official Tamil television remake of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein; the first official Tamil television remake Kalyanam Mudhal Kadhal Varai was aired on Star Vijay from 3 November 2014 to 27 January 2017.

Casting

Ashwathy Ash was selected for the female lead role of Vedha in the series after her notable performances in the Telugu series Manasantha Nuvve and Malayalam series Kudumbavilakku.[8] Sameer, a well-experienced actor in Tamil and Telugu films, was chosen for the male lead role of Vikram.[9] Uma Padmanabhan, known for her portrayal of mother characters, was cast as Vedha's mother.[10]

Release

The serial was released on 24th April 2023, to replace Raja Rani 2's 6.30PM slot on Star Vijay.[11] Two promo videos were released on 24th March and 30th March 2023, with the first one presenting an ego clash between Vikram and Vedha, with the second promo video showing the aftermath.[12]

The serial was originally presented with the name Vikram Vedha, resembling the film of the same name as the storyline is based on the two eponymous characters clashing with each other. However, a legal notice was sent to the creators of the series by S. Sashikanth, the producer of Vikram Vedha to change the name of the serial.[13] Thus, new promos were released on 6th[14] and 7th[15] April respectively.[16]
