The city of Mississauga is located in the province of Ontario in Canada. It was once referred to as Toronto Township. It is in the Peel Regional Municipality, which is next to the city of Toronto to the east, and it is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. As of the year 2021, the population of Mississauga was estimated to be 717,961, making it the seventh most populated municipality in Canada, the third most populous in the province of Ontario, and the second most populous in the Greater Toronto Area after the city of Toronto itself. A fall of 0.5 percent brought the city's population down from 721,599 in 2016 to 717,961 in 2021, according to the census. This was the first time in the city's history that its population has decreased.

The close proximity of Mississauga to Toronto is largely responsible for the city's explosive population expansion. In the latter part of the 20th century, the city became home to a diverse population and developed a prosperous core commercial sector as a result of these trends. Malton is a neighbourhood in the city that is situated in the northeastern part of the city. It is home to Toronto Pearson International Airport, which is the busiest airport in Canada, as well as the headquarters of a number of Canadian and worldwide firms. Mississauga is not a traditional city; rather, it is an amalgamation of three former villages, two townships, and a number of rural hamlets (a general pattern common to several suburban GTA cities) that were significant population centres, with none being clearly dominant, prior to the city's incorporation that later coalesced into a single urban area. This pattern is common to several suburban cities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Indigenous people have inhabited this region for thousands of years, and the city of Mississauga is located on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinaabeg people, including the Mississaugas, who gave the city its name. The majority of what is now Mississauga was first established in 1805 as Toronto Township, which was located inside York County. In 1851, when new counties were created by dividing off sections of the original county, Peel County was one of the counties that was created. When the area of Peel was transformed into a regional municipality in 1974, the town of Mississauga was elevated to the status of a city. Mississauga had first been created as a town in 1968.
