Miss Nhung (Vietnamese: Chị Nhung) is a 1970 Vietnamese war film co-directed by directors Nguyễn Đức Hinh and Đặng Nhật Minh, based on a short story penned by writer Nguyễn Sáng. The film contains propaganda messages conveyed through the icon of a female war hero successfully portrayed by Ái Vân. She became the idol of many soldiers working for North Vietnam at that time.[1][2]

Plot

Nhung was a strikingly beautiful secret agent working as a messenger for Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. When Nhung was a child, her mother was killed by South Vietnam soldiers while her father was away for the war. Being left on her own, Nhung was forced to work as a helper in a wealthy family in Saigon. During this time, she met Tám Sơn - a Viet Cong high-ranked agent - who worked as a tutor for children in said family. She showed her smartness when noticing Tám Sơn’s double identity and his secret documents’ hiding place. When Saigon’s police came to the house and started searching, she moved the documents to another place, saving Tám Sơn from being arrested. Eight years later, Nhung and Tám Sơn met again in a mission whose goal was to destroy a South Vietnam military post. She volunteered to lead the way for Viet Cong soldiers to the post. Since the post was strictly guarded, she decided to go alone into the enemy’s zone, planning to throw a grenade into their tank. Successfully completing the mission, Nhung left for another one. The story of Nhung was recounted by Tám Sơn to the writer, on the Vàm Cỏ Đông River, before Tám Sơn went into an unknown battle.

  • Kim Dung as Nhung (as a child)

Reception

According to the memoir of the leading actress Ái Vân, Miss Nhung was a phenomenon during the period of 1971-1974. Because of the meager living condition of most Vietnamese people at that time, the image of a Saigon girl dressed in modern fashion on (make-believe) Saigon streets made people excited. Ái Vân became the idol of young people and Viet Cong soldiers. Her photos were widely sold at newsstands. Many soldiers bought it and kept it in their wallets[3], even introducing her as their girlfriend when showing it to people of a remote area. Her photo could be exchanged for food such as chickens and rice.[1]
