Mir Arifa Jan is an Indian politician and social advocate from Jammu and Kashmir. She is the current State President of the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) in Jammu and Kashmir. She has been involved in advocacy related to healthcare, labor welfare, education, disability rights, and social issues in the Union Territory.
Political career
Mir Arifa was officially appointed as the State President of NCP-SP, Jammu and Kashmir in 2023.She also serves as the State President of the Women’s Wing of the BRICS Human Rights Mission in Jammu and Kashmir.[1]
Public advocacy and initiatives
Mir Arifa has actively advocated for healthcare policies in Jammu and Kashmir. She expressed her gratitude to Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Fauzia Khan for presenting in Parliament a bill on doctor protection, which she had previously advocated for.[2] Her party subsequently submitted the proposal in the Rajya Sabha.
She has urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to absorb MBBS doctors citing WHO norms and the shortage of medical professionals.[3] Mir Arifa has also advocated for the establishment of a Rehabilitation University in Jammu and Kashmir to provide specialized education and services for rehabilitation.[4][5]
Mir Arifa has promoted labor rights and fair wages in the region, advocating for the implementation of the Central Daily Wagers Act and the Central Minimum Wages Act.[6]
In addition, she has addressed social and ecological issues. She wrote to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir urging protection for pigeons at religious shrines.[7] She also requested the establishment of drug de-addiction centers across the Union Territory.[8] Additionally, she sought central intervention for the rights of persons with disabilities in Jammu and Kashmir.[9]
