Mimo is an Austrian coding platform and company that offers interactive programming courses in various programming languages, including HTML, JavaScript, Python, SQL, and Swift.[1]
Introduced on iOS in 2016, Mimo has since expanded to Android and Web browser|web browsers.[2] The company uses a freemium model and offers an optional premium subscription to unlock additional features.[2]
History
Mimo was founded by Johannes Berger, Dennis Daume, Heinrich Ameseder, and Lorenz Schimik in 2016, following Swifty, a Swift-focused coding app that Berger built during his senior year at TU Wien.[1] The team came together after Swifty was featured on Product Hunt, as Daume, Ameseder, and Schimik offered Berger help in expanding to Android, marketing, and improving the design.[1]
In 2016, the team participated in the Techstars accelerator program.[3]
In 2017, Mimo raised a €650,000 seed round with venture capital firm PUSH Ventures and angel investors such as Johann Hansmann, Busuu co-founder Bernhard Niesner, and the founders of Runtastic.[4]
Features
Interactivity
In addition to writing code and displaying how code runs as users write it, Mimo includes a variety of additional exercise types, such as finding Software bug|bugs or dragging script elements into the correct order.[5]
Gamification
Mimo features gamification elements such as coins, leaderboards, streaks, and XP to encourage users to establish and maintain a habit.[6]
Awards
In 2018, Mimo was among Google’s picks for the 10 best Android apps.[7]
In 2023, Mimo received a Scale-up of the Year Award from professional services partnership Ernst & Young.[8]
