Mike West is American statistician. West works primarily in the field of Bayesian statistics, with research contributions ranging from theory to applied research in areas including finance, commerce, macroeconomics, climatology, engineering, genomics and other areas of biology. Since 1999, West has been a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistical Science at Duke University[1].

Education and career

West earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1978, and then Ph.D. in Mathematics (Statistics) in 1982, from the University of Nottingham. After a few years at Warwick University, he moved to Duke University in 1988 to join the new Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences (ISDS), where he held the position of Director from 1990 to 2011. West has made significant contributions in the field of Bayesian theory and methods for time series analysis and forecasting, authoring three books that are considered central texts in the area. Some of his other research areas include non-parametric Bayesian analysis. One of his papers in this area, in 1995, concerned implementations of Dirichlet process mixture models[2] that defined a significant contribution to growth of use of non-parametric Bayesian analysis in many areas of application. West's research with molecular geneticists and clinical researchers defined early contributions to the use of emerging large-scale genomic data for personalized medicine based on predictive models for identifying types of breast cancer using gene expression data[3][4]. This research contributed to the popularisation of Biomarker discovery through gene expression profiling. West has been a consultant with various companies, banks, government agencies and academic centres, co-founder of a biotech company, and board member of several financial and IT companies. West has also served the international statistics profession in founding roles and as a board member in a number of national and international centres and institutes as well as professional societies.
