Mikalay Klimovich (27 September 1961 – 7 May 2023) was a Belarusian blogger and civic activist who died in prison. He was sentenced to one year for insulting Head of State with an online caricature, in spite of health issues.[1][2]
Persecution
Law enforcers looked into Klimovich’s social media in December 2022 and remanded him in custody. After three days in detention, the blogger felt sick at heart and was released pending trial.[3]
In February 2023, the Pinsk District and City Court fined Klimovich 111 Belarusian rubles for reacting with a smiley face to a picture of Vladimir Putin in a Nazi uniform. The court concluded it amounted to dissemination of Nazi symbols.[4]
Later that month, the same court sentenced him to one year in a penal colony for sharing a similar picture of Aleksandr Lukashenko on Odnoklassniki, a Russian social network. Klimovich, who had a heart disability, was arrested in courtroom.[5]
On March 15, Belarusian human rights groups declared him a political prisoner.[6]
International reaction
Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, deplored the death of Klimovich.[7]
The European Union said his death “is yet another proof of the regime’s complete disregard for peoples’ lives and rights. It also demonstrates a plain disregard of Belarus’ obligations under international law and of the calls by the international community to stop the senseless repression.”[8]
