Mihai Mănescu (born December 8, 1984, Bucharest, Romania) is a Romanian screenwriter, writer, and communications specialist. He is known for his work in cinema, literature, and education, especially in the fields of storytelling and children's literature.

Mihai Mănescu is also an associate professor, teaching screenwriting at Hyperion University,[1] and has contributed to coordinating the communication strategies of several NGOs and tech platforms in Romania.[2]

He is the co-founder of the Susțin.org Association , a non-profit organization in Romania that helps other NGOs in the development and implementation of fundraising and communication campaigns.[3]

Education

He studied Screenwriting and Audiovisual Communication at UNATC: National University of Theatre and Cinematography "IL Caragiale" , which he graduated in 2007. He subsequently obtained a PhD in Cinematography and Media in 2011, with an interdisciplinary thesis based on screenplay structure, mythology and the history of religions.[4]

He also pursued a Master's degree in the History of Western Esotericism at the University of Exeter , UK, furthering his academic interest in mythology and storytelling.

His films have been broadcast on Netflix Romania and have been appreciated on the national and international festival circuit. In addition to his film work, Mănescu has been teaching screenwriting at Hyperion University for over a decade, applying Joseph Campbell 's Hero's Journey model to his courses. In 2013, he translated his seminal book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces , into Romanian.[5]

Children's literature

Mihai Mănescu made his literary debut at Humanitas Junior publishing house in 2022 with the children's novel The Wish Tree: Childhood Memories , inspired by the screenplay of the film of the same name.

In 2023, he published the volume Stories of Hope , a collection of stories that brings to the forefront essential values ​​such as kindness, empathy, and perseverance.

In 2024 he published the adventure novel Comoara lui Harap-alb , a modern reinterpretation of the fairy tale written by Ion Creangă , Povestea lui Harap-alb .

In his books, Mihai Mănescu aims to bring back to the attention of children and parents the great works of classical Romanian literature.[6] He seeks to reinterpret traditional themes and motifs in a way accessible to the current generation, making reference to masterpieces such as Memories of Childhood or The Tale of Harap-Alb. Through this approach, Mănescu contributes to the preservation and revalorization of Romanian cultural heritage, offering modern readers stories that combine tradition with a contemporary perspective.[7]

Mihai Mănescu is a member of the Association of Writers for Children and Adolescents in Romania: De Basm.[8]

In 2024, he created the children's story and literacy resource website Minipovești.ro.
