Miguel Fernando Oliva (born 12 February 1965) is an Argentine sociologist and university professor whose work focuses on social research methodology, public opinion, social network analysis and the study of poverty and labour markets. He is a professor and researcher at the National University of Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) and has published books on applied research methods, including Investigación social para el análisis de la opinión pública y el comportamiento electoral and Los desafíos del análisis del tiempo en Ciencias Sociales.[1][2]

Early life and education

Oliva earned a degree in Sociology from the University of Buenos Aires (1992), a Master of Public Administration (UBA–INAP, 1995), and a PhD in Social Sciences (UBA, 2017). His doctoral thesis, on longitudinal analyses of poverty in the Partido de Tres de Febrero during the Argentine socio-economic crisis of the early 2000s, was later published as Los desafíos del análisis del tiempo en Ciencias Sociales.[3]

Academic career

Since the late 1990s, Oliva has taught research methods and statistics in Argentine higher education. At the National University of Tres de Febrero he has been an associate professor and researcher since 1998 and director of the tourism undergraduate programme since 2020; he is also a member of the university's Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios Avanzados (CIEA).[4] He has participated in master's and doctoral programmes in social sciences and research methodology, including the Master’s in Generation and Analysis of Statistical Information (UNTREF–INDEC) and the Doctorate in Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires.[4]

Oliva has also collaborated with public institutions in the areas of tourism statistics and social indicators and has taken part in academic activities in other Latin American universities.[5] Since 2021 he has served as president of the Asociación de Sociólogos de la República Argentina (ASRA).[6]
