Microsoft PowerPoint also known as Presentation software was developed by Robert Gaskins and Dennis Austin of Forethought, Inc., a business that specialises in the production of computer software. On April 20th, 1987, it was first made available, and at that time, it was exclusively compatible with Macintosh computers. PowerPoint was only available for use for three months before being purchased by Microsoft for around $14 million. This was the first major purchase that Microsoft had made, and as a result, the company established a new business unit for PowerPoint in Silicon Valley, which was the previous location of Forethought.

The Microsoft Office suite, which first debuted in 1989 for Macintosh and then in 1990 for Windows and included a collection of different Microsoft applications, eventually included PowerPoint as one of its included programmes. PowerPoint was first incorporated into the development of Microsoft Office in 1994, with the release of PowerPoint version 4.0. As part of this integration, PowerPoint adopted a converged user interface as well as shared common components.

Before the release of a version for Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint had a relatively tiny part of the market. Nevertheless, as both Windows and Office rose in popularity, PowerPoint's market share increased dramatically.

402–404 PowerPoint has been reported to have a 95 percent dominance of the global market for presentation software since the late 1990s.

PowerPoint was first developed to give graphics for group presentations inside corporate organisations. Nevertheless, because to its versatility, it has become highly popular for usage in a variety of different communication contexts, both in and outside of the business world. PowerPoint's impact on society as a whole has been felt as a powerful change, eliciting strong reactions such as the advice that it should be used less, should be used differently, or should be used better. This widespread adoption of PowerPoint has had a significant impact on the society as a whole.

The initial version of PowerPoint, which was released for the Macintosh in 1987, was used to create overhead transparencies. The second version, which was released for the Macintosh in 1988 and for Windows in 1990, included the ability to create colour 35 mm slides. PowerPoint is now accessible on platforms outside Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows thanks to the inclusion of versions for iOS, Android, and online access, which brings the total number of new features and modes of operation since then to twelve significant updates.
