Michael Wijaya Goutama (born 10 July 1961) is an Indonesian chartered engineer, professor, and business leader. He is a professor at the University of Tsukuba in Japan,[1] Co-Chief Executive Officer of the Indonesia Solar Energy Research Center (ISEREC),[2] Co-Chair of the Engineering20 (E20) forum,[3] Special Advisor to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs of Indonesia and to the Minister of National Development Planning (Bappenas),[4] Director of International Affairs at Al-Azhar University Indonesia,[5] and a member of the University of Toronto International Council.[6] He formerly served as Chairman of the Singapore Committee of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).[7]
Education
Goutama studied engineering at the University of Toronto, where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.[8]
Career
Goutama was the chairman of the KADIN Singapore Committee, where he was involved in bilateral investment work and discussions following the introduction of Indonesia’s omnibus law.[9] During this period, he moderated international business dialogues in his official capacity. These included sessions with then President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani at the New Era, New Opportunities dialogue hosted by the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) in 2017,[10] as well as a dialogue with former General [Tito Karnavian]. He was a judge on the Fortune Times Awards 2021 panel.[11]
He later co-founded the Indonesia Solar Energy Research Center (ISEREC) and became its Co-CEO. ISEREC maintains a collaboration with the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) at the National University of Singapore.[12]
In addition, Goutama holds the position of Co-Chair of the Engineering20 (E20) forum, which helps to provide engineering policy input to the G20 on various sustainability-related issues.[13] He also serves as a mentor through the Singapore Mentorship Committee (SMC).[14]
Recognition
Goutama is registered as an ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE). In 2024, the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) named him an Honorary Fellow.
