Michael Paulus (born May 19, 1988) is a Swiss-American billionaire[1] best known for co-founding the insurance technology company Assurance IQ[2] and for his early role in the financial technology firm Addepar[3]. He is the founder and managing partner of PCM Encore, a family office and wealth management firm with over $1.2 billion in assets[4], and has been an active investor in artificial intelligence and financial technology startups.
Early life and education
Paulus grew up in Bow, Washington. He studied Economics and Management Science & Engineering at Stanford University.
Career
Addepar
Paulus was the Founding President of Addepar, a wealth management technology platform founded in 2009 that provides portfolio reporting and data aggregation tools for investment advisors.
Assurance IQ
In 2016, Paulus co-founded Assurance IQ, an online insurance and financial products distribution platform, with Michael Rowell. The company applied data science and direct-to-consumer marketing to match individuals with health, life, auto, and other insurance policies.
In September 2019, Prudential Financial acquired Assurance IQ in a deal valued at up to $2.35 billion[5], marking one of the largest insurtech acquisitions to date.[6]
PCM Encore
Following the sale of Assurance, Paulus founded PCM Encore, a family office and wealth management firm. PCM Encore provides investment management, tax planning, and estate strategies for high-net-worth families.[7]
Venture investment
Paulus is an active private investor, with interests spanning artificial intelligence, fintech, and real estate. He served on the boards of Ontra[8] and Nesto[9], two notable fintech companies. Other venture investments include stakes in OpenAI, RelateIQ, and Vector.
Real estate and private equity
Paulus is an active real estate investor. He is a General Partner at ACG, which manages more than $4b in real estate projects. Through PCM Growth he is also an investor in Hawx Pest Control.[10]
Personal life
Paulus divides his time between Aspen, Colorado and Bellevue, Washington. He is married, with three children. He serves on the Board of Directors of US Ski Mountaineering[11] and is a donor to medical research at Stanford University with a focus on Nutrition.[12]
