Michael N. Huhns is a researcher and educator in computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering. During his career in these areas, from 1969 to the present, he served as a professor at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) and University of Texas, a senior research scientist at Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, a department chair at UofSC, a research consultant at Global InfoTek Inc., the CEO of Intellitronics Inc., and an emeritus professor at UofSC..[1][2][3]
Education
Huhns received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering University of Michigan in 1969. He obtained an M.S. University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering University of Southern California in 1975 under the supervision of Dr. William K. Pratt.
Research
Huhns' research interests include multiagent systems, service-oriented architecture, software engineering, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and sociotechnical systems. The breadth of his research contributions in computing is depicted in the graphical ontology referenced in the sidebar.
His research accomplishments include the following books:
- Distributed Artificial Intelligence (1987) [4]
- Service-Oriented Computing: Semantics, Processes, Agents (2005)[5], together with Prof. Munindar P. Singh.
His work is grounded on four basic principles: (1) There is a power in explicit knowledge and logical reasoning, e.g., millions of data items might be compactly and more precisely expressed as one explicit equation and applied functionally[6] (2) There is a power in distribution, especially in processing at the edge occurs closer to data, can proceed in parallel, can be more resilient, and can be more robust, as described in his book on DAI [4] and in this 1983 patent for "Multiple-Microcomputer Processing" [7] (3) There is a power in exploiting the environment, where its inherent randomness can be an advantage in yielding more robust behaviors[8][9] (4) There is a power in exploiting collective thought and action[10] [11].

- 2014, AAAI (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence) Fellow for "significant contributions to the field of multiagent systems and its application in information management and service-oriented computing."[15]
