Michael Mayes is an American baritone known for his performances in both traditional and contemporary operas, musical theater, and concerts.

Early life and education

Mayes was born on February 21, 1976, in Houston, Texas, and grew up in Cut’n’Shoot, where he developed a passion for music. He began his formal vocal training at the University of North Texas where he earned his bachelor's degree, and he continued his Graduate studies at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Career

Mayes has performed with many opera companies around the world, including Houston Grand Opera, Staatsoper Stuttgart, English National Opera, Teatro Real, The Barbican, Theatre of Sound, Bergen National Opera, The Dallas Opera, and Washington National Opera, among others. He has also appeared in concerts and recitals across the United States and Europe. Mayes has portrayed a wide range of roles, from the title role in Verdi’s Rigoletto to the title character in Berg's Wozzeck. He has also gained recognition for his portrayal of contemporary characters, such as Joseph De Rocher in Dead Man Walking and Jim Thompson in Glory Denied. In addition to his work on the stage, Mayes is an advocate for the arts and has participated in numerous community engagement programs, Veterans involvement, Alzheimer’s awareness, audience talkbacks, and masterclasses.

Personal life

Mayes is married to mezzo-soprano Megan Marino, with whom he has collaborated on multiple occasions. They split their time between Creede, Colorado and Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to singing opera, Michael plays guitar and sings lead vocals with the Colorado bluegrass-fusion band Midnight Cricket Club. Mayes and Marino co-founded Creede Musical Artist Collective, which serves the community of Creede with accessible music.
