Michael A. Cowling (sometimes known professionally as Professor Tech) is an Australian professor in computing and educational technology at RMIT University. He is known for research in technology‑enhanced learning, AI literacy in education, and outreach on digital safety and literacy.

Early life and education

He earned a Bachelor’s and Honours in Information Technology at Griffith University and completed his 2004 PhD with a thesis on non‑speech environmental sound recognition using neural networks and wavelet transforms.

Academic career

Cowling lectured at Griffith University (2000–2003), served as Associate Professor in ICT at CQUniversity (2003–2025), and became Professor in Computing Technologies at RMIT University in May 2025, directing its Hub for Apple Platform Innovation (HAPI)..[1] He is President of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (ASCILITE) (2023–2025)[2] and formerly served as Senior Editor for the Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice[3]
