Michael Chakraverty (born 1993) is a writer, podcaster and baker. He competed on the tenth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2019, placing sixth.[1]

Life and Career

Michael was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and raised in Ilkley before moving to New Scone in 2000. His mother was a professional musician and teacher, and his father was a doctor - he also has two brothers. Between 2011 and 2015 Michael attended the University of Edinburgh, gaining a degree in English Literature.[2] While at University, Michael worked at The Edinburgh Playhouse[3], and following graduation he moved into theatre management - working as a House Manager at Royal Shakespeare Company.[4]

Television

At the age of 26, Michael took part in the tenth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2019, placing sixth.[1] He achieved Star Baker in Week Three (Bread Week) as well as a handshake for his signature Keralan Star Bread.[5] In Week Five, Michael experienced panic attacks during the Technical Challenge[6], later writing that the experience was 'one of the most stressful situations' he had ever found himself in. He was eliminated in Week Seven of the competition.

Writing and Public Career

In 2019 Michael began writing for various publications including the i newspaper, Metro HuffPost UK, The Guardian and Catapult Magazine[7][8][9][10]. In 2020, he became a regular columnist for Metro UK, and became a live-blogger for The Guardian.

Michael co-hosts the menkind podcast with Mark Watson, upon which they explore the concept of masculinity alongside a range of guests which have included Tom Daley, Alastair Campbell, Thomas Page McBee,Jackie Cox and James McVey.[11]

Michael fronts regular baking videos for Netflix's Youtube Channel, and regularly collaborates with various brands on his social media platforms.

Personal Life

Michael currently resides in North Shields and works for a children's social care organisation. He came out as gay in 2012, and is currently single.
