Michael Britt Lively Jr. (born May 25, 1981) is a former American football offensive tackle who spent time with the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Texas A&M University and Abilene Christian University (ACU), where he later became a member of the ACU Athletic Hall of Fame. Lively was placed on the Silsbee High School Wall of Honor in 2004.
Early life and high school career
Lively was born in Beaumont, Texas, to Mike Lively, a former Abilene Christian University football player. He attended Silsbee High School, where he was a three-year starter on the varsity football team and helped lead the Tigers to the UIL State Quarterfinals in 1998.
Throughout high school, Lively earned several honors, including:
- Second Team All-District (sophomore year)
- Honorable Mention Defensive Line and Offensive Line (junior year)
- First Team All-District in four positions: offensive line, defensive line, punter, and placekicker (senior year)
- All-Region selection
- Finalist for the Willie Ray Smith Award
- Selection to the 1999 Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game
Lively holds the Silsbee High School record for the longest field goal at 47 yards.
In addition to football, Lively participated in powerlifting, earning varsity letters all four years. He qualified for regional finals as a junior and finished fourth in the state as a senior in the super heavyweight division. During his senior season, he broke the regional deadlift record previously held by Olympic weightlifter Mark Henry.
Lively was also a four-year letterman in track and field. He reached the regional finals as a sophomore and junior and finished fourth at the state meet as a senior. He set the school shot put record at 62 feet, 4 inches.
Texas A&M University
Lively began his collegiate football career at Texas A&M University in 1999, redshirting during his freshman season and participating in the Alamo Bowl.[1] In 2000, he appeared in nine of twelve games for the Aggies, earning a varsity letter and participating in the Independence Bowl (Snow Bowl).[2]
Abilene Christian University
In 2001, Lively transferred to Abilene Christian University, where he was a three-year starter. He started 30 games over three seasons and competed in the Cactus Bowl in Kingsville, Texas.[3]
His ACU honors include:
- Lone Star Conference Honorable Mention (sophomore year)[4]
- Lone Star Conference Second Team (junior year)[4]
- Unanimous All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference selection (senior year)[2]
- Team-voted Best Blocker for three consecutive seasons[3]
Lively was inducted into the Abilene Christian University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.[5]
Professional career
Lively signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent in May 2004 and participated in the team’s offseason program and minicamp. Contemporary reports described him as a long shot to make the final roster. His professional football career concluded shortly after his time with the Rams organization.[6]
