Merab was born in Tbilisi on March 13, 1971. In 1987-90, he studied at the art college named after Moses Toidze. In 1990-96, he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Art, at the faculty of easel graphics. Since then he lives and works in Tbilisi. Due to huge interest in his paintings, he created new works in Nepal, Florida in 2016-18. Currently, he actively cooperates with various galleries: Gallery Nobles (Tbilisi, Georgia), Dokusanat Gallery (Turkey), etc...
In 1992, he married Irma Kusiani, who is also an artist, and they have two children.
Technics
In Merab Gagiladze's refined and clear painting, his artistic education and knowledge of easel graphics could be clearly felt. He graduated from the Faculty of Graphics at the Art Academy. In the early period, he also worked in lithography, although his basic style and artistic thinking have not changed radically, only the expressive form has changed. He works without sketching. His paintings sometimes leave the impression of colorful graphics. However, color is no less important in his works. When painting with oil paints, he has his own specific technique, he uses several thin layers of paint, like the old masters, using the lacing technique, he gets transparent tones. Gold and silver leaf is often used in the works. It starts with a yellow color and after a few layers, the yellow tone seems to glow from within. Colors come with mood. The color often changes depending on the country, place and even season.
Creative inspiration
The artist avoids creating portrait faces of specific people. His characters are the product of the artist's imagination, his idealized types, generalized and allegorical, sometimes even seemingly genderless. It is difficult to assign them to any specific time and space. The heroes of Merab Gagiladze's works seem to have come from the past, but at the same time, they adapt to the modern world with eternal themes and values.
It is determined by his artistic taste and clear priorities and, as it were, accumulated the influence of all previous eras and styles, on the contrary, he is happy to make his own interpretation and appropriation of these influences. Jan van Eyck, Lucas Cranach, Bosch, Rembrandt, Gustav Klimt, the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, Japanese, African or old Georgian art are the source of the artist's inspiration. A kind of eclectic mix in the details of his works create the artist's individual handwriting and elevated aesthetics, which is his main credo.
