Mekodi Arcillia Morailane-Mokoena was born on 6 February 1946 and is a South African struggle veteran, from the Kroonstad region. Morailane-Mokoena joined the staff of Bodibeng High at the beginning of 1976 as a Science teacher. Although Morailane-Mokoena was not active in politics, she was politically aware and brought that political awareness with her to Bodibeng, where she was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D.) for being accused of inciting violence [1] and detained in solitary confined for 3 months, awaiting trial.

Early life

Arcillia Mekodi Morailane-Mokoena was born on 6 February 1946 in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa. Morailane-Mokoena attended Basotholand High School, in Lesotho and completed her matric at Kroonstad Bantu High School. Thereafter, she enrolled in a number of universities to study a Bachelor of Medicine (MBChB) and attended the University of Natal in the mid-1960s, Wentworth Campus. It was at this campus that she became aware of politics, where Steve Biko also attended. After a short stint at the University of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus, she worked as a bookkeeper in Johannesburg. Morailane-Mokoena enrolled at Ngoye University (also known as the University of Zululand) where she completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Degree from 1972 - 1974. In 1975 she completed her University Education Diploma (UED), at the same university.

Personal life

Mekodi Arcillia Morailane-Mokoena gave birth to her first-born son, Fana Mokoena in 1971 at Boitumelo Hospital, Kroonstad. In 1980 when she was teaching at Makabelane High, she met and married the late Elias Bhuti Mokoena and in 1981 gave birth to her son, Karabelo Israel Mokoena, at Sebokeng Hospital. Morailane-Mokoena finally gave birth to a daughter, Tlotlisang Dipallo Charity Xulu (née Mokoena), at Elizabeth Ross Hospital, Phuthaditjhaba in 1984. Lastly the birth of her last-born son Mamello A Blessing Relebohile Mokoena in 1985 at Diepkloof Clinic.
