Mehrdad Ghaffarzadeh (born 1966) is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He has directed several feature films, including The Receiver (2011), The Sea and the Flying Fish (2015), On the Zero Line (2019), and Sing Me a Love Song (2019).

Career

Ghaffarzadeh began his career in 1981, initially writing short stories before transitioning to directing documentaries and feature films.[1]

His debut feature, The Receiver (2011), was screened at the Fajr Film Festival.[2]

In 2015, his film The Sea and the Flying Fish was selected for the main competition at the 37th Moscow International Film Festival, where it won the Honorary Diploma (Critics’ Award for Best Film).[3] The film tells the story of a hearing-impaired teenager held in a correctional camp who communicates through painting.[4]

Ghaffarzadeh co-directed On the Zero Line (2019) with Japanese filmmaker Yoshimasa Jinbo. The film received a theatrical release in Japan and was later screened at the 8th Iranian Film Festival in Tokyo.[5][6]

His next film, Sing Me a Love Song (2019), was an Iran–Turkey co-production. Filmed on location in Istanbul and Iran, it starred Yusuf Çim, Afsaneh Pakru, and Pejman Bazeghi.[7]
