A media proprietor, media mogul, or media tycoon is a successful businessperson who controls the media that is consumed by a large number of people, either through their own personal ownership of the media or through a dominant position in any company or enterprise that is involved in the media industry. One may be referred to as a tycoon, baron, or business mogul if they have a great amount of power, ownership, and influence over a huge corporation that is covered by the mainstream media. Creators and founders of social media platforms may also be categorised as owners of media.

When mass circulation newspapers were first introduced in the 19th century in the United States, significant newspaper owners rose to prominence for the first time. Ownership of radio and television networks, film studios, publishing firms, and more recently internet and other types of multimedia businesses were added to the scope of proprietorship in the 20th century.

For current relevance, social media sites like Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg need to be taken into consideration. Production of mass media relies heavily on both the medium and other forms of technology.
