Mecademic Robotics

Mecademic Robotics is a Canadian robot manufacturer based in Montreal, Quebec. The company was established in 2012 by Jonathan Coulombe, and ÉTS Professor Ilian Bonev. Initially, the two founders targeted the robotics research and education sector. The company’s name, which is a contraction of mechanics and academic, represents these beginnings.
Mecademic's flagship product, called "Meca500" is a six-axis microbot weighing just 4.5kg (around 10lbs) and with a payload of 0.5kg (550g). Mecademic claims the Meca500 is "the world’s smallest, most precise and easy to use industrial robotic arm.[1]" One of the unusual aspects of these robotic arms is their embedded controller. This design aspect differentiates the Meca500 from other robotic arms, in a similar way that a MAC is more compact than a PC. The Meca500 is designed to be integrated into an automation application as a component using a PC or PLC, and any programming language.
In August 2021, Mecademic's Meca500 was featured at a Montreal Science Centre exhibit[2]. In an interview with the Centre marking the occasion, Mecademic said their robots were being sold in 33 countries to be used in different industries including in the USA, by NASA.[3].
