Maximilian Schnell (born 28 October 1993) is a famous French-German bike packer and ultra-cyclists. He is known in the ultra-cyclist community for moving borders of what is physically and mentally possible on a bike. The most famous challenges he has completed are the Deux Mille Challenge[1] in 2023, where he rode all mountain tops in the Pyrenees and Alps over 2,000 meters, and the Three Grand Tours Challenge in 2021, where he rode the Grand Tour routes one day behind the professional riders in Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and La Vuelta.

Life as a bike packer

After completing his Management Masters in Paris, in 2017, Maximillian Schnell has lived self-supported on, and with, his bike. He has been riding from Alaska to Ushuaia along the crest of the Rocky Mountains and the Andes, and been on a solo trip, through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Armenia, and Georgia.

Three Grand Tours

In 2021 he committed to a four-month ultra-cycling project, bike packing the Three Grand Tours[2]. The principal was riding all stages of the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and La Vuelta, including all transfers between stages and transfers from one Tour to another. It had to be done at the same time as the professional peloton and self-supported. The challenge received some attention, especially during Tour de France.

Deux Mille Challenge

On 12 August 2023, Maximilian Schnell completed a historic challenge. As the first person ever, he conquered all 204 paved mountains over 2,000 meters in the Pyrenees and the Alps. He rode more than 10,500 kilometers, and gained more than 270,000 vertical meters, on his route[3], which started on 27 May 2023 in Luz-Saint-Sauveur and ended on Col du Galibier 77 days later. He rode it self-supported, bringing tent, sleeping bag, food, and tools with him.
