Matteo Alvaro (born December 3rd, 1982) is an Italian geologist expert in mineralogy, mineral physics, and crystallography who is currently Professor of Mineralogy at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia[1].His work range across Material Science, Mineral Physics and Petrology. He is lea author or co-author of over 100 articles in international scientific journals.

Early life and education

Matteo Alvaro was born in Milan. He was educated at the University of Pavia where he obtained his Bachelor degree in 2004 and Master degree in 2006. In 2009, he obtained his PhD degree from the University of Pavia with a thesis on the characterization of the high-temperature and high-pressure behavior of several pyroxenes[2]. He carried out his research during the PhD between the University of Pavia and the University of Padua[3][4].

Career and research

Matteo Alvaro after obtaining his PhD in 2009 he moved to Virginia Tech for his first postdoctoral fellow to join the group of Prof. Ross J Angel and Prof. Nancy L. Ross to carry out research on the structural and elastic behavior of crystalline material at high pressure conditions[5]. In 2012 he moved back to Italy at the University of Chieti where, in the framework of the ExoMars 2018 mission, in collaboration with Prof. Lucia Marinangeli, he conducted studies focused on the investigation of volcanic systems on Mars adopting crystallographic methods to investigate pyroxenes that he learned during his PhD working in the group of Prof. Domeneghetti and Prof. Tazzoli[6]. In 2013 Matteo Alvaro joined the research group of Prof. Fabrizio Nestola at the University of Padua in the framework of the European Research Council (ERC) funded grant “Indimedea”[7] to develop methods for the investigation of the depth of formation of diamonds deciphering the stresses preserved by inclusions trapped in lithospheric diamond. During these years at the University of Padua, Matteo Alvaro together Ross John Angel started to develop some of the new ideas to exploit measurements of residual stresses on host inclusions systems[8]. To pursue the development of these ideas Matteo Alvaro received two grants from the Italian ministry for research and University (MUR, SIR grant MILE DEEp[9]) first and then from the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant, TRUE DEPTHS[10]) immediately afterward. The support of the MUR and ERC allowed Matteo Alvaro and his collaborators to establish the Experimental Mineralogy Lab located in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia dedicated to the memory of Prof. Fiorenzo Mazzi[11][12][13] During the years between 2015 and 2022 Matteo Alvaro and his collaborators have renewed the old concept of geobarometry of host inclusion systems opening up a variety of new exciting applications later referred to as elastic geothermobarometry or Raman barometry[14][15][16][17][18][19][20].
