Matt Szymanowski is a Polish-American writer and director born in Mountain View, California in 1982. He wrote, directed, and produced the Sundance Lab finalist film The Purple Onion.

Early life and education

Szymanowski, the son of Polish immigrants, was raised in Cupertino, California where he graduated from Cupertino High School. He received a bachelor's degree in Humanities from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, studied film, TV, and theatre directing at the Polish National Film School (PWSFTViT) in Łódź, Poland, and received a Master's in Fine Arts degree in Writing for Film and TV from Emerson College in Boston. He is a Berlinale Talents alumnus and a MacDowell fellow.[1]

Career

The dramatic comedy The Purple Onion had its world premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival[2] and went on to play other festivals internationally and was picked up for distribution by Cinemation Studios. Development on his next feature script, the psychological thriller Glorious Empire[3][4] began in 2017 but was later paused by complications due to the pandemic.

His films, including shorts, have played at San Francisco International film festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, Tirana International Film Festival, Cinequest Film Festival, Warsaw International Film Festival, Gdynia Film Festival, and Comedy Cluj International Film Festival.[citation needed]
