Matt Morgan (born 25 January 1980) is a British intensive care doctor and author. He is best known as author of Critical and One Medicine.

Early life and education

He attended The University of Wales College of Medicine in 1998, now part of Cardiff University. Midway through training, he spent a year at Bristol University studying Medical Law and Ethics. He also spent time as a sponsored RAF cadet during his studies. After graduating in 2004, he spent time working in South Wales and Australia, before doing a PhD in medical artificial intelligence at Cardiff University between 2010-2013.[1].

Career

Medicine

He became a consultant in intensive care medicine at The University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in 2016. He spent three years as the Welsh lead for critical care research during the COVID pandemic[2]. Between 2022-2023, he worked as a consultant in The Royal Perth Hospital, Australia and was appointed as an adjunct Professor by Curtin University. He returned to his role in Cardiff in 2023[3][4]

Research

He has contributed to more than 50 scientific articles following his PhD in artificial intelligence including The New England Journal of Medicine[5][6][7], The Lancet[8] and The American Heart Journal[9].[citation needed] He is a regular columnist at the British Medical Journal.[citation needed][10]

Charity and public engagement work

His is a member of the BMJ Commission on the Future of the NHS[11] and is the medical advisor for The National Theatre' in London's production of "Nye", the story of Aneurin Bevan written by Tim Price (writer)|Tim Price, directed by Rufus Norris and starring Michael Sheen[12]. He is an ambassador for the bereavement charity 2Wish[13], donating a percentage of his book sales to this charity and Room to Read. He gave the 2023 Woodridge Lecture in London[14] and was nominated for the Royal Society's David Attenborough prize for public engagement in 2022.

Media work

He has spoken to large audiences at some of the largest book festivals in the world including Hay[15] and Ubud[16]. His articles have featured in The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, Esquire magazine, The Spectator, The Daily Mail, The Sunday Mirror and The Huffington Post. He has spoken on a number of popular podcasts and radio programmes including The Today Program on BBC Radio 4 and international talk shows[17].

He has appeared on many television programs including Sky News, CNN, ITV, The BBC, The Jeremy Vine Show and international channels.[citation needed][18][19]

Work during the pandemic

His open letter to patients during the pandemic was read by over half a million people worldwide and viewed three million times on international news channels[20][21]. It addressed difficult issues including end of life care and prompted a national discussion allowing the voices of patients and their families to be heard[22][23]

His checklist for management of critically ill patients with COVID was adopted by the UK’s intensive care society with over 7000 interactions globally. He was an expert witness for the Welsh Government on a number of occasions and advisor to other national bodies[24]
