Matt Bevan is an Australian podcast presenter and current affairs journalist.

He is currently the writer and presenter of the If You're Listening podcast series from ABC News (Australia).[1]

Personal life

Matt Bevan was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, son of ABC Radio presenter Paul Bevan.[2]

As a teenager he reported for ABC Newcastle on a radioactive incident[3] at Merewether High School, where he was a student.

Bevan was heavily involved in theatre in Newcastle prior to beginning his career as a journalist.[4]

He is 35 years old, and married with four children.[5]

Career in journalism

In 2010, he was employed by the ABC as a radio producer in Newcastle[4], before transferring to ABC Radio Sydney in 2012.

From 2016 to 2021 he was newsreader and reporter for RN Breakfast with Fran Kelly.[5][6]

If You're Listening podcast

In 2018 he developed, wrote and presented the podcast series Russia, If You're Listening,[6] focused on the Mueller Investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections, cyberwarfare by Russia and the Russo-Ukrainian War.[7]

In 2019 the series explored in detail the meeting between Alexander Downer and George Papadopoulos which triggered the initial Crossfire Hurricane (FBI investigation) into Russian connections with the Trump campaign. Featuring interviews with both Downer and Papadopoulos, it was called the "most comprehensive exploration of the Downer-Papadopoulos meeting" by The Australian.[8]

The podcast was subsequently renamed America, If You're Listening, to focus on the Presidency of Donald Trump more broadly,[9] then China, If You're Listening, as it shifted focus to Australia–China relations|Australia-China relations, and Australia, If You're Listening, as it told the history of Climate change in Australia|climate change policy in Australia.[10][11]

On the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, If You're Listening reported exclusively that Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke relied on raw evidence from a single diplomatic cable during a tearful speech on national television following the massacre.[12]

The report found that the cable was subsequently retracted by diplomats, and likely was based on information from the same unreliable source as the widely-cited[13][14][15] UK cable on the massacre, which was declassified in 2017.[12][16]

Recognition

If You're Listening was awarded best Political, Social & Cultural Affairs podcast at the 2019 Australian Podcast Awards.[17]

In 2022, Bevan was named Australian Podcast Host or Presenter of the Year in the Radio Today Podcast Awards for his work on If You're Listening.[18][19]
