Background

Matamaal was founded in 2015 in Gurugram, Haryana, by Nalini Moti Sadhu and Surender Sadhu. According to Mint Lounge, the restaurant was developed around dishes associated with Kashmiri Pandit household cooking, a style that had limited representation in mainstream restaurant dining at the time.[1] In 2020, The New Indian Express reported plans for Matamaal to operate an outlet in Doha, Qatar; the restaurant later ceased operations during the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]

Reception

Matamaal has been the subject of coverage in Indian food and lifestyle publications. Mint Lounge profiled Nalini Moti Sadhu's work through the restaurant in a 2021 feature on Kashmiri Pandit cuisine.[1] In 2022, The Hindu referred to Matamaal in a report on the sale of Kashmiri kehwa in Canada.[3] Femina profiled Sadhu in 2023 in an article on her work with Kashmiri food.[4]
