Maryam Banikarim is an Iranian-American business and marketing executive and community organizer.

Early life and education

Banikarim was born in Tehran, Iran, to Kambiz and Gity Banikarim. She has a sister named Susie Banikarim, who is a journalist.[1] In 1979, the family fled Iran and relocated first to Paris and then to the United States.[2] She attended Barnard College and Columbia Business School.[3]

Career

In 2020, Banikarim joined Nextdoor as its Chief Marketing Officer (CMO).[4] She was part of the executive team that took the company public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: KIND) in 2021.[5] Before her role at Nextdoor, Banikarim held marketing executive positions at various companies, including Hyatt, Gannett, NBCUniversal, and Univision.[6]

Community Activism

In addition to her professional work, Banikarim has been involved in academic and community initiatives. She gave the commencement speech at Columbia Business School in 2021[7] and became a trustee of Barnard College in 2022.[8]

Banikarim co-founded NYCNext[9], an organization that produced live pop-ups, including A Moment for Broadway[10], and a video rendition of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" during the COVID-19 pandemic.[11][12] In 2022, she helped launch The Longest Table in Chelsea, New York, a potluck-style lunch attended by 500 people.[13] Additionally, Banikarim launched the WE❤️NYC campaign with The Partnership for New York to promote the city's regeneration.[14]
