Mary Rita Holland grew up in Miramichi, in northeastern New Brunswick, moving to Kingston, Ontario in 1999. She has a doctorate in Philosophy from Queen’s University and has been a member of Kingston City Council since 2014.

Early Life

Mary Rita Holland was born on May 7, 1977 in Miramichi, New Brunswick. She was a Parliamentary Page in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1995.

Education / Teaching

Holland has a Bachelor of Arts Honours in English and History from the University of New Brunswick (1999), a Master of Arts (History) (2001), a Masters of Public Administration (2004), and a Doctorate in Philosophy from Kinesiology and Health Studies, with a focus on health policy analysis, from Queen’s University (2022).

She has been a teaching assistant and adjunct instructor for the last five years at Queen’s University and most recently taught courses in Introduction to Health Promotion, Social Movements in Health, and Qualitative Methods.

Her publications include: “More than Chores: The invisible health work of family caregivers in rural New Brunswick, Canada”, Health & Place, Vol. 73, January 2022[1] “Canada’s Missed Opportunity to Implement Publicly-Funded School Meal Programs in the 1940s”, with Sarah Carbone and Elaine Power, Critical Public Health Vol. 30, No. 2. Other Work Experience

Holland worked at different jobs to pay her way through school. For many years, she was a server at downtown Kingston’s pub The Toucan. She also worked counselling people looking for work at KEYS Employment and Newcomer Services and ReStart.

Politics

Holland has represented the Kingscourt-Rideau District on Kingston City Council since December 2014[3], winning re-election in 2018 [4]. She is a member of the Public Health Board and the Kingston Access Bus Service Board, in addition to the Housing and Homeless Advisory Committee and the Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation Policies Committee. She was the co-chair, with Ted Hsu of the Mayor’s Task Force on Housing [5].Her article "Tasked to Find Solutions, How the City is addressing multiple social challenges" was published in the Queen's University Department of Family Medicine magazine "Horizons", Issue 2, 2019. Holland ran for the Ontario New Democratic Party in the Kingston and the Islands riding, coming second to incumbent John Gerretsen in 2011 and to Sophie Kiwala in 2014.

Holland was President of the Ontario New Democratic Party from November 2014 to February 2022.

In December 2021, Holland was a guest panelist at the Coalition of Kingston Communities’ discussion on “Diversity and Democracy at City Hall” along with Kemi Akapo, City Councillor, Peterborough, and former Kingston Mayor Helen Cooper.
