Mary Woolley is the President and CEO of Research!America.[1] She has been in this role since 1990.[2]

Education

Mary Woolley received her Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Stanford University in 1969 and her Master of Arts in Humanities from San Francisco State University in 1972.

Career

From 1972-1981, she worked as a Project Coordinator and Intervention Director for the largest NIH-sponsored clinical trial that had been created to date, called the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT).[3] In 1981, she began work as an administrator at the Medical Research Institute of San Francisco (formerly known as the Institutes of Medical Sciences), and assumed the role of the Institute’s Executive Director and CEO from 1986-1990. Since 1990 she has been President and CEO of Research!America.

Honors

  • Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science[4]
  • Elected Member, National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine), part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine[5]
  • She received an honorary doctorate of science ( D.Sc.) from the Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2010[6]
  • She received an honorary doctorate of laws (L.L.D) from Wayne State University in 2015.[7]

Mary Woolley is a founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, a member of the National Academy of Medicine Board on Higher Education workforce[8], a Member of the Awards Committee of the National Academy of Medicine, an Advisory Member for Mis-information on the Internet at National Academy of Medicine, a Charter Class Member of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities Society of Fellows and Scholars, and a Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Science CEO Group.
