Martial arts, Military and law enforcement applications, competition, physical, mental, and spiritual development, entertainment, and the preservation of a nation's intangible cultural heritage are all reasons for which martial arts are practised.

The phrase "martial art" has come to be linked with the fighting techniques of East Asia in recent years, although it was initially used to refer to the combat systems of Europe as far back as the 1550's. The phrase is originated from Latin and literally translates as "Marsican arts," after the Roman god of battle. Because many martial arts were never "martial" in the sense of being utilised or produced by professional fighters, several scholars have suggested that fighting arts or combat systems would be more accurate classifications.
