Marshall Vandruff is an American illustrator, and art instructor. He began his career as a commercial illustrator, working for advertising companies all over Southern California. Over the years, Marshall transitioned his focus to teaching. He is known in the art education community for his focus on anatomy, story telling, and lessons from the old masters. More recently, he began collaborating with Stan Prokopenko on Stan's online art school Proko. [1] His contributions to Proko include his role on the Draftsmen Podcast as Stan's co-host,[2] his voice over on Proko lessons, and script writing[3].

Education

Marshall studied at Fullerton Community College finishing with an associates degree in advertising illustration. Marshall attended Fullerton college for nearly 8 years without ever feeling the need to move on and get any other credentials. From there, he felt he had all of the skills he needed to move into the professional world of illustration where he worked in Advertising for more than 20 years.

Teaching Career

While at Fullerton College, Marshall was invited to teach storytelling and art in 1984. Fullerton College has been Marshall's home for over 25 years. He has taught hundreds of students, many who went off to go have their own professional careers in the arts. Over the years, Marshall has been invited to teach a video game, film, and television studios all over Southern California including Blizzard, Obsidian, Sony, and Rockstar [4].

Drew Struzan complemented Marshall's teaching by saying "Marshall Vandruff’s teaching is inspiring and refreshing. I had been avoiding classrooms until Marshall offered his anatomy class. The subject was something I always wanted to concentrate on but I hadn’t the time for personal study and school had become such a nasty word. Marshall made the school experience intense, enjoyable, and educational once again.”[5]

Bernie Wrightson said about Marshall's anatomy teaching “In twenty-odd hours I learned more about human anatomy in Marshall’s class than I was able to learn on my own in thirty-five years as a self-taught artist.”[5]
