Markus H.P. Müller is an economist, lecturer, TEDx speaker[1], and nature advocate[2]. The Managing Director currently serves as the Chief Investment Officer ESG at Deutsche Bank[3]. Early life and education

Markus H.-P. Müller is reared in South Westphalia, Heggen, Sauerland. He began his study in economics at the University of Siegen and obtained a master´s degree in economics at the University of Münster.[10] In parallel to his study of economics he studied Chinese language and history.

Career

After completing his master´s degree he acquired international experience, e.g at Allianz Life Insurance in Shanghai.[3] Markus H.-P. Müller began his career at Deutsche Bank in DB Research as executive assistant to the chief economist, Prof. Norbert Walter. From early 2017 until mid of 2018 Müller was a member of the advisory board of the "Carbon Bubble" project led by the German Environmental Agency. Currently he is serving as the Global Head of the Chief Investment Office of the Private Bank, Deutsche Bank AG.[11] In June 2022 he took over the role of Chief Investment Officer ESG Private Bank in addition to his current function.[3] He was responsible for driving Deutsche Bank´s Ocean agenda. Taking a key role in the partnership of Deutsche Bank and ORRAA, Müller was appointed as a Member of the ORRAA Steering Council.[12]

Research

Markus H.P. Müller´s primary research focus lies on the question around socio-economic transformation, i.e. why societies are changing as they change.[13] [14] His underlying assumption is that the economy is a result of social interaction.[15] In his recent work he laid his emphasis on the blue economy and nature as capital.[8] [9] [16] [17] His other areas of research include ESG investments[18] [19], sustainability policy[20] and cryptocurrencies[21] [22]. Together with Marion Laboure he released a paper analyzing the dynamic landscape and ESG implications of cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies (CBDC).[23] At the UN climate change conference COP26 in Glasgow he spoke for the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists on the topic of “Protecting life diversification through standards and nature-based solutions”.[24] At COP27 in Sharm-el Sheik Müller took part in multiple panels and discussions such as for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.[25] Prior to the COP27 he contributed in a technical panel at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon.[26] In early 2023 he held his first TED talk on the topic of nature and economic choice.[1] In 2023 at the Economist Impact Conference he advocated for a system change.[27]

In 2019 he published his first book and an additional one in 2021.[28] In 2023 he will publish his third book on the socio economic transition of India.

Markus H.-P. Müller lives in Frankfurt am Main, and speaks German, English, Chinese and Arabic. His passions are belletristik, culture like opera and nature.
