Marina Velez Vago (born 1963) is a visual artist, researcher and educator.[1], best known for her works across photography, video and interventions that explore humanity's relationship with its environment[2]

A key theme of Velez Vago’s work is how art can offer opportunities to investigate our relationship with nature and other animals, and she is an advocate for how photography and video can make socially constructed values visible.

Her investigations focus on sustainability and environmental issues, and her research is informed by feminist theories and art practice enquiries.[3][4]

Life and career

Marina Velez Vago was born in 1963 in Rosario, Argentina[5].

During this time she studied under the tutelage of artist Jorge Torres, director of the Emilio Caraffa Museum.

In 1989 she emigrated to the rural town of Cercedilla, in Spain, and in 1999 she moved to The Netherlands.

In 2006 she moved to Cambridge, UK, where she studied her Fine Art BA at Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University between 2006 and 2008, where she earned the Supanee Gazeley Prize for students[6]. She completed her Masters in Fine Arts at the same university in 2010. In 2012 she obtained a scholarship from the Anglia Trust Foundation to do fieldwork research in Belalcázar, Spain, where she worked with shepherds and farmers to understand how climate change and environmental problems affected rural areas[7]. In 2013 she started her PhD at the University of Plymouth, completing it at Anglia Ruskin University in 2021, with the thesis title ‘Exploring value, meaning and worth through art practice: five art projects in rural Spain’[8].

In 2012 she co-founded the Cambridge Sustainability Residency for Artists, which run until 2015, producing talks, exhibitions and publications, such as MILK[9] and ROAR[10][11].

She founded and run the Sustainability Art Prize for students at Anglia Ruskin University between 2012 and 2022, and which was selected finalist for the Green Gown Awards in 2020.

In 2016 she was invited to participate in the first Festival for the Earth in Venice[12][13], organised at Ca’Foscari University of Venice, together with international artists Alan Sonfist and Giuseppe La Spada.

Velez Vago’s teaching career include teaching undergraduates and postgraduates at Norwich University of the Arts, leading courses in artistic research and supervising PhD students[14], and leading courses in philosophy and art at the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge[15]

Her interest on artistic academic research extends to organising symposia for the Nordic Summer University[16][17], Groundwork Dialogues[18] and World Rivers for Water Museums, supported by UNESCO, and the Horasis Group[19], for which she was invited to discuss art and sustainability in their conference in Japan in 2022.
