Early Life and Education

Marin Minamiya is currently a student at Columbia University but when she was only 18 months old she moved from Japan to live overseas due to her father’s work where she lived abroad for many years. During this time, she lived in Malaysia, China (Dalian & Shanghai) and Hong Kong. She has spent most of her life abroad and didn’t return to Japan until she was a high school senior.

When Marin was 19 years old and a student at Waseda University, she became the youngest Japanese person to summit Mount Everest. She also climbed all of the highest peaks in 7 continents and became the youngest Asian person to hold the ‘7 Summits’ record. She even went further and reached both the North and South Poles giving her the title as the youngest person in the world to complete the ‘Explorers Grand Slam’. Prior to these successes, she experienced a traumatizing mountaineering accident in Japan but didn’t let that experience hinder her ability in achieving her goal.https://mirai-no-mori.jp/ambassadors/%7C.

Despite her achievements, Marin tries not to define herself solely as a “Mountaineer/Alpinist”. She was taught by a respected mentor who believed that, “the past does not determine the present, but the present and future holds power to define the past.
