Maria Lawton
Maria Lawton is a Portuguese American food writer, cookbook author, TV personality, and culinary travel guide.[1][2][3]
Early life
Maria Lawton was born in São Miguel Island, Azores.[1][2] In 1967, she emigrated to New Bedford, Massachusetts. During her time in New Bedford, she has been featured in several newspaper articles, television shows, podcasts, magazines and more.[1][2]
Career
In 2013, Maria created a Portuguese food dedicated blog named "The Azorean Green Bean".[3] In March of 2014, she self-published her first best seller book, Azorean Cooking: From My Family Table to Yours.[1] It is both a memoir and a cookbook.[1] In 2016, she became a co-host on the podcast "Our Portuguese Table" alongside Angela Simoes.[4] The podcast is meant to bring awareness to Portuguese food and culture. She has since collaborated with notable figures such as The Portuguese Kids, George Mendes, Robert Morey, Ana Diogo-Draper, David Garcia, Joey Bats, Lucy Pepper, Alexander Dias, Donna Pacheco, Dr. Darlene Sousa, Hélia Sousa, Saudade Toronto, Ana Miranda, Lisa Furtado, David Leite, Manuel Azevedo, Peter Ferreira, and Antelmo Faria.[5] She was featured on the podcasts "Amateur Traveler Podcast",[6] "Destination Eat Drink",[7] and "Topics Under the Stairs"[8] and has been on several magazines such as Edible South Shore & South Coast[9] and Relish Portugal.[10]
In 2019, "Maria's Portuguese Table", a eight part series, debuted regionally on PBS Rhode Island.[11][12] In 2021, it became nationally distributed on PBS/Create (TV network).[11] It is a showcase of Azorean dishes and cultures all around the world.[11]
She has also hosted several culinary travel tours through PBS Rhode Island travel club.[2][13][14]
