Margaret Umbers is a New Zealand actress and singer.
Acting Career
In 1981, Margaret Umbers appeared in the movie Smash Palace in a supporting role as Rose, who is taken hostage by the main character.[1][2] She then made television appearances in One of those Blighters and Both Sides of the Fence.[3] In David Blyth's award-winning 1984 horror splatter film Death Warmed Up, she played one of the lead roles as Sandy, the girlfriend of a revenge killer.[4][5] In a review, the performance of the two leads was considered “not nearly as annoying as they had every right to be.”[6]
Also in 1984, Umbers appeared in Heroes, a television series about an up-and-coming band. She played the lead role of bassist Maxine Harris, a role she held throughout all fourteen episodes until 1986.[7]
In 1985, Mr. Wrong was released, with Margaret Umbers as Samantha, the “beautiful but numbingly conventional flatmate” of the main heroine.[8] In the 1986 horror film Bridge to Nowhere she portrayed Tanya, who must defend herself against a violent cattleman in the wilderness.[9] She then appeared in several television series, including Neighbours as Cassie Campbell (1986), E Street as Kasie Watts (1989-1993), and Chances as Shanie (1991).[10][11]
From 1993 onward, she appeared in several episodes of the hospital series Shortland Street as Katherine Blake, a woman who falsely claims to be a doctor and attempts to murder her boyfriend.[3]
Music Career
In addition to acting, Margaret Umbers has always had an interest in music, particularly jazz, in which she specialized as a singer. In 2013, her debut album Love on a Swing was released. It was described by the New Zealand news portal Stuff as "elegant, seamless, sexy jazz that takes you back to an era of strong drinks, cigars, and silk."[12]
