Margaret Murphy is an American artist, educator and curator who works in painting, printmaking, and mixed-media. She is currently Director and Teaching Professor in the Program in Visual Arts[1] of Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (2018 - present.) She holds an MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and a BS from Towson University.

Career

Murphy's work draws on current events, feminist theory, critical theory and the history of painting to explore the intersection of gender and consumerism.

Her early work centered around figurines from dollar stores and was shown extensively in galleries and museums throughout New York, New Jersey and the Northeast.

Art historian Midori Yoshimoto curated Murphy's ten-year retrospective survey, "Decoding the Marketplace," which opened at NJ City University in 2012,[2] and then traveled to Ramapo College (NJ),[3] and Goucher College (MD).[4]

The Phillips Collection selected Murphy's work for inclusion in "Tomorrow the Sun Will Rise", the 2026 juried exhibition of artists living in the Washington DC area.[5][6]

Murphy's work is held in public and private collections. Her paintings "Broken #1" and "Broken #2" are in the Johns Hopkins University Campus Collection.[7][8] The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities acquired her painting "Vanitas, BLM" via the DC Art Bank Collection. Additional works are in the collections of the Hudson County Community College Foundation Art Collection and the Zimmerli Art Museum.[9][10]

She has received an individual artist grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation,[11] and two Individual Artists Awards from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 2008 and 2019.[12][13]

Murphy has been an artist-in-residence at MacDowell,[14] the Central Michigan Barstow Artist in Residence,[15] the Brodsky Center at PAFA,[16] and the Gallery Aferro Residency Program.[17]

Curating

Murphy was the founder and director (2005-2009) of The Garage gallery in Jersey City, NJ.[18] The gallery's inaugural exhibition, "Girl Talk," was reviewed in the New York Times with critic Benjamin Genocchio noting the gallery's "grit and spirit." [19] In 2025, the archives of The Garage were accepted into the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington DC.[20]

Murphy has curated numerous group exhibitions at other venues including "Material Girls" [21] at the Visual Arts Center of NJ in 2010.
