Margaret Bancroft (born 1854) was an American pioneer of special education and founder of the Haddonfield Training School for the multiply disabled, which later became known as The Bancroft Training School[1].
Bancroft graduated from the Philadelphia Normal School and went on to become a fifth grade public school teacher.[2] She gave a special interest to students who were struggling, and would work to figure out their problems; some had cognitive or vision impairments and some had blindness.[3] Working with doctors she found the best ways to adapt her teaching to the needs of each individual.[3]
In 1983, at age 25[4], Bancroft founded the Haddonfield Training School[5]. Charles Lippincott purchased a large home on Kings Highway in Haddonfield to become the school. Bancroft took on teaching approaches that were far from conventional at the time, including exercise, artistic and sensory development, and nutrition.[6]
By 1892 with a growing enrollment of students Bancroft had to move the school to a larger space.[6] Margaret was able to provide an education that was seen then as radical and years ahead of its time, but that produced incredible results[6]. Many children were able to remain in education, thrive in their communities and go on to gain employment.[6] Renamed in 1904 the school became known as the Bancroft Training School[1].
In 1894 Bancroft hosted the first Haddon Fortnightly women's club to encourage educational, literary, and social interests among its members[7].
Today, Bancroft still exists as a leading non-profit specialising in neurological rehabilitation, autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities[8]
