Marcos Sawaya Jank is a Brazilian agribusiness specialist, senior professor of Global Agribusiness at Insper in São Paulo, and coordinator of the Global Agribusiness Center (“Insper Agro Global”). He is also a corporate board member, speaker, and agribusiness commentator.
Career
With significant contributions to global agri-food issues over a 37-year career, Jank has accumulated extensive professional experience, always centered on agriculture and agribusiness.His roles have included academic professor and researcher, federal government and international organization official, president and board member of companies and industry associations, executive, and speaker in Brazil and abroad. He has lived outside Brazil for ten years, studying or working on global agribusiness topics in the United States, France, and Singapore.
Academic and research career
From 1989 to 2007, Jank was Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), teaching at the School of Economics, Business and Accounting (FEA-USP), the Institute of International Relations (IRI), and the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP). He completed sabbaticals at Georgetown University, the University of Missouri–Columbia, and at European institutions in Paris and Montpellier, France.
He was the second holder of the “Luiz de Queiroz Chair” in Integrated Agri-Food Systems at ESALQ-USP (2019–2020). In 2003, he founded and served as president of the Institute for International Trade Negotiations (ICONE), focusing on applied research in international agricultural trade. In 2024, he was appointed to the IICA Chair in International Trade and Food Security at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA).
Corporate and industry leadership
Jank served as president of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) from 2007 to 2012. He later became Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Business Development at BRF Asia-Pacific in Singapore (2014–2017) and president of the Asia-Brazil Agro Alliance (2017–2019), an initiative uniting major Brazilian agribusiness export associations (ABPA, ABIEC, and UNICA) to strengthen representation in Asia.
He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of COLOMBO Agroindústria, chairman of the Sustainability and Innovation Advisory Board of Minerva Foods, and a member of the Advisory Board of GK Partners. He also serves as a trustee of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), a member of the Brazil-China Business Council (CEBC), and of the Agribusiness Council of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP-COSAG).
Previously, he was a board member of Rumo Logística, Comerc Energia, and the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), as well as trustee of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. He also served on advisory boards of Scania Brasil, Agrotools, the National Council for Economic and Social Development (CDES) of the Presidency of Brazil, the Energy Research Company (EPE), and the Brazilian Association for Business Communication (ABERJE). He has also led consulting and research projects for the World Bank, FAO, UNDP, OECD, and other international organizations.
Public service
In the public sector, Jank worked as Special Expert on Integration and Trade at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Washington, D.C. (2001–2002). In 1999, he served as Special Advisor to Minister Celso Lafer at the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade (MDIC) of Brazil.
Education
Jank holds a degree in Agronomy from ESALQ-USP, a master’s in Agricultural Policy from CIHEAM in Montpellier, France, a Ph.D. in Business Administration from FEA-USP, and a tenure (Livre-Docência) in Agricultural Economics from ESALQ-USP.
Media and communication
Jank is currently an agribusiness commentator at CNN Brasil..[1] and has been a columnist for O Estado de S. Paulo[2] and Folha de S.Paulo.[3]. He is a frequent contributor to Valor Econômico[4], Grupo Bandeirantes (Band News, Agro+, and Terra Viva), Veja magazine, Times Brasil CNBC[5], Canal Rural, Brazil Journal[6] , Poder 360, Exame, Reuters[7], Bloomberg[8], Financial Times, and The Economist.
Awards and recognition
- Listed among the “100 Most Influential Figures in Brazilian Agribusiness” in 2012, 2014, and 2018 (Dinheiro Rural magazine).
- ABERJE Award for Best Corporate Communication Campaign in Brazil (2011) for the sugar-energy sector communication project.
- Named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Brazil” (Época magazine, 2010).
- Included among the “100 Most Influential People in the World in Bioenergy” (Biofuels Digest, 2010 and 2011).
- Recipient of Forbes “50 Over 50” award (2024), recognizing individuals who excel after the age of 50.[9].
