Marcel Santos (born in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian-American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Santos’ work features sketches and oil paintings about the nightlife and social scene of Los Angeles.

Early Life

Santos was born in São Paulo, Brazil from a family of art director and graphic designer. He started creating art before he started attending elementary school, drawing for his friends and family. His earliest inspiration for art was the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", in particular the character Jessica Rabbit. </ref> He moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1990's.

Career

Prior to painting professionally Marcel did street art on the boardwalks around Los Angeles and freelanced as a storyboard artist and a comic book pencil artist.

In his early 20's, a couple of gallery owners encountered Santos doing live boardwalk paintings and they were instantly allured by his style of art. They commissioned a collection of paintings to be shown at their gallery and as a result, Santos created his first painting collection titled "LA Nights".

Since his first collection of art, Santos has continued to produce many paintings for both the public and private owners. Among his collectors are Joe Rogan,[1] Russell Peters[2], Mike Tyson, Freddie Prinze Jr. and his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Sérgio Mendes[3] to name a few.

Style

Santos’ primary intent in his works is to tell a story in a contemporary and modern fashion. Not only does the piece’s visual language tell a story but the pieces themselves are an output of a story behind it. The element of story is important for the artist because it is what inspires the artist himself to create. Without a story that he finds interesting, there is no work to be produced. Santos believes that ultimately clients are not looking at a single piece of painting just for the paint on canvas, but the energy that is being communicated by the artist behind the painting. To Santos, that energy is the story and that is why it is such an integral part of every one of his work. A unique approach that Santos has in approaching creation is "working backwards". Santos always titles the paining before he even picks up the first brush. The elements that inspire him to write titles are the nightlife and the happenings around his lifestyle.

Personal Life

Santos is a long time practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who started training at the age of 6. He is a Black Belt under 7th degree Coral Belt Jean Jacques Machado [4][5] and trains law enforcement officers and celebrities for their upcoming projects.
