Marcel Fournier, born in Sherbrooke on December 15, 1946, is a historian, a genealogist and author of around thirty publications and around a hundred articles in history and genealogy. He is recognized as an expert in these fields in France, Europe and Canada.

Biography

After college studies in Montreal, he entered the service of the Quebec government in 1970. He worked at the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec (in Montreal) from 1992 to 2002, the year of his retirement. He has lived in Longueuil since 1974.

Alongside his professional activities, Marcel Fournier has been interested in the history of Quebec since 1970.

Today considered, through his work, as a specialist in genealogy in Quebec, in the history of French immigration to Canada, Marcel Fournier has presented several communications and conferences in Quebec, in France and in Europe on the history of settlement in Canada.

Publications

Marcel Fournier began by publishing, from 1972 to 1977, four monographs on the Lanaudière region in Quebec.

In 1978, he directed his research towards the history of our origins. In May 1981, he published his Biographical Dictionnaire biographique des Bretons en Nouvelle-France, a work appreciated by Quebec and French genealogists.

This revised and expanded work led to the publication in 1987, by the Genealogical Society of Quebec[1], of the book Les Bretons en Amérique du Nord, des origines à 1770, a 422-page study which identifies all the original pioneers Breton established in North America.

At the beginning of May 1989, Marcel Fournier published at Éditions du Fleuve (of Montreal), Les Européens au Canada, des origines à 1765. This 350-page study presents all the immigrants from Europe outside France, from the beginnings of the New France until the Conquest and during the first years of the British Regime.

In 1992, Marcel Fournier presented historians and genealogists with his work De la Nouvelle-Angleterre à la Nouvelle-France, a 282-page book published by the This study tells the tormented story of Anglo-American captives in Canada between 1675 and 1760.

Always looking for new subjects, he published, in April 1995, with (of Quebec) and in Paris, his masterpiece: Les Français au Québec 1765-1865, un mouvement migratoire méconnu: a study which relates the history of French immigration during the century following the Conquest. This work was honored with three prizes in history and genealogy.

In December 1997, he published with Éditions de la Société généaologique canadienne-française Origine des familles pionnières du Québec ancien. This work presents an analytical bibliography of 252 publications concerning the origin of Quebecers.

From 1998 to 2001, he wrote the genealogical part of Passeport-Sourire on behalf of the Maison de la France in Montreal.

In 2005, he published an important work with Éditions les Portes du Large,[2] Rennes in France, entitled Les Bretons en Amérique française 1504-2004.

In 2009, he published a genealogy guide with Éditions de l'Homme, entitled Retracez vos ancêtres. Guide pratique de généalogie. An edition was also published by Québec-Loisir in 2010.

In 2012, he published La colonie nantaise de Lac Mégantic with Éditions du Septentrion. A French settlement in Quebec in the 19th century.

In 2013, a new publication was published Les Premiers Montréalistes 1642-1643. Les origines de Montréal.

In 2014, he published, with Michel Langlois, a work on the history of the Carignan-Salières regiment published by Éditions Histoire Québec, Collection

In 2015, added La Rochelle et le Canada. Migrations transatlantiques aux xviie et xviiie siècles. Éditions Histoire Québec. Fédération Histoire Québec.

In 2015, he published with Éditions du Septentrion with the collaboration of Pierre Le Clercs Les Français émigrés au Canada pendant la révolution française et le Consulat 1789-1804.

In 2017, he published with Éditions du Septentrion Les officiers des troupes de la Marine au Canada 1683-1760, a project for which he was the director.

In 2018, he published with Éditions Histoire Québec La Population de Montréal en 1741. A reconstituted census Collection Fédération Histoire Québec.

In 2018, added Les soldats français de Montréal morts à la Grande Guerre 1914-1918.

In 2018, he published with Éditions du Septentrion La contribution des pionniers de la ville de Paris au peuplement du Canada 1617-1850.

In 2021, Les premières familles anglocanadiennes issues des mariages mixtes au Québec 1760-1780.

Functions

From 1984 to 1989, he was national vice-president of the Association Québec-France.[3]

From 1995 to 1997, he chaired the Quebec Committee of the Bourges Congress which ensured Quebec's participation, as guest of honor, in the 14th congress of the Fédération québécoise des sociétés de généalogie.[4]

From 1997 to 2003, he was a member of the board of directors of the Fédération québécoise des sociétés de généalogie.[5]

From 1997 to 2016, Marcel Fournier coordinates, in Quebec, the Franco-Quebec research project on the family origins of French and foreign emigrants established in Canada from origins to 1865, which continues to update and develop the.

From 1999 to 2008, he was president of the Société généalogique canadienne-française.

Since 2003, he has chaired the commemoration committee of the Franco-Quebec Commission on Common Places of Memory.[6]

From 2006 to 2009, he directed the Montcalm Project, a vast study on the soldiers of the French troops sent to New France during the Seven Years' War (1755-1760) which led to the publication of the collective work Combattre pour la France en Amérique.

Since 2010, he has been a member of the Longueuil toponymy committee.

From 2015 to 2017, he directed the research project on officers of the Naval troops in Canada 1683-1760 in collaboration with French and Canadian researchers.

The archives of Marcel Fournier are kept at the Quebec archives center of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.[7]

  • 2003 — Archange-Godbout Prize, the highest distinction awarded by the Société généalogique canadienne-française, for all of his historical and genealogical work.
  • 2006 — Montérégie Literary Grand Prize, other genres category, for his work Les Bretons en Amérique française 1534-2004.
  • 2007 — Medal from the National Assembly of Quebec for his achievements in history and genealogy.
  • 2009 — Medal of honor from the Quebec Federation of Genealogical Societies for his exceptional contribution to genealogy.
  • 2009 — Medal from the French Defense Historical Service for his contribution to the Montcalm Project.
  • 2010 — Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France for his exceptional contribution to Franco-Quebec history and genealogy over the past 30 years.
  • 2011 — Co-recipient of the Robert-Prévost prize awarded by the Société généalogique canadienne-française for the work produced by a collective Combattre pour la France en Amérique : les soldats de la guerre de Sept Ans en Nouvelle-France, 1755-1760, published by the Société généalogique canadienne-française.
