Kathy Lewis is an environmental chemist and Professor of Agricultural Chemistry at University of Hertfordshire...[1] within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES). She is also Research Director for the Agriculture and Environment Research Unit (AERU) [2]

Career

Lewis spent 1 year in industry in the role of Environmental Manager, and 23 years at Warren Spring Laboratory before joining the University of Hertfordshire in 1995. She was awarded the title of Professor in 2014 [1]. She is primarily concerned with research, however she does have some post-graduate teaching responsibilities and is also active in the development of the taught course in agriculture [3].

Her primary research activities are focused on the evaluation and management of the environmental impacts of agriculture [2], spanning a number of fields such as the environmental labelling of produce; environmental chemistry; pesticides and toxicology; agri-environmental policy development and assessment; climate change and carbon footprint adaptation and mitigation; and rural development [4]. Lewis' research takes a whole farm perspective, focusing on agricultural processes and the development of techniques to promote sustainable development and the development of agri-environmental policy for nutrients, waste, pesticides, biodiversity and resource management [1]. Most recently, she has worked on projects regarding livestock feed additives, climate change, and the exposure of bystanders to agricultural pesticides [3].

Lewis has also contributed to her discipline by interacting with research in the field and peer review. She was named as one of the winners of the 2018 Sustainability Outstanding Reviewer Awards for the journal Sustainability, that recognises the contribution of reviewers based on both the quantity of papers reviewed, the quality of reviews submitted, and the speed of reviews [5].

She is a Fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers (FIAP) and a Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (MIEMA).[1], a member of the Departmental Research Strategy Comittee and the HES Business Forum [2]

AERU

The Agriculture and Environment Research Unit (AERU) is part of the School of Life and Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire (UH). It is responsible for researching the environmental impacts of agriculture.[6] It was established by Lewis after she joined the UH in 1995 [1], in order to develop the award-winning Environmental Management for Agriculture (EMA) software, and now specialises in agri-environmental science, the environmental impacts of food production, and whole farm sustainability assessments [7]

AERU researchers largely focused on the evaluation and management of the sustainability of horticulture and agriculture, in particular focusing on toxicity and pollutant fate, transport, and management with a view to inform and develop agricultural policy [3]. One aim of this research is to encourage sound environmental practices.[7]

Research by the AERU has been supported by funding from a variety of organisations from European, International and National government bodies, industry stakeholders and NGOs. [3][7] For example, the AERU was awarded funding by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) to review the use of chemical additives in livestock diets and critically evaluate their potential to reduce waste gases and the delivery of other environmental benefits that may contribute to climate change. The aim was to inform the existing European regulatory process on feed additives, and aid in the development of more sustainable policies in this area [8]. Furthermore, the AERU was also commissioned by the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to produce a study called Effective Approaches to Environmental Labelling of Food Products. The report, on which Lewis was one of the authors, found that existing consumer 'eco-labels' require more development to fully inform customers. It also found that labelling needed to be better regulated in order to be more effective [9].

Lewis is also scientific lead for the on-line Pesticide Properties Database (PPDB) as part of the AERU, a resource which is used by researchers, regulators and other stakeholders worldwide who work in the area of pesticide fate and toxicology[4]. The PPDB was developed at, and is hosted by the UH, and is currently the best source of chemical and environmental information on pesticides publicly available, informed by data submitted by pesticide manufactures. The PPDB has been supported by the Chemistry and the Environment Division, who approved a project to create a funding mechanism and an international committee of scientists that will maintain, enhance, and monitor the quality of the PPDB database [10]
